THIS IS BUTTER FIELD

You were hired to create change — but not given the power to do it

You’re expected to transform organisations that weren’t designed to change. The people whose decisions determine progress don’t report to you. And when strategies stall, you’re told to build a better business case or communicate more clearly.

But the real job was never just sustainability. It’s influence.

Butter Field teaches Inside–Out Sustainability: a methodology for leading change when you don’t have formal authority. We focus on the three layers that move systems — your identity, your relationships, and the strategy behind your influence.

Because influence isn’t just what you say.
It’s who you are in the room, the trust you’ve built, and how you design the path forward.

This is personal

I'm a sustainability leader with over a decade of experience leading strategic initiatives across fashion and retail in the U.S. and Australia.

I've been a specialist, a Head of Sustainability, and a university lecturer. I've designed learning, built strategies, embedded governance, engaged C-suite, and led cross-functional teams. I've also had strategies approved that never got executed, budgets denied, and navigated the emotional weight of doing work that feels existential inside systems that weren't designed to change.

I've been inspired, discouraged, hopeful, cynical, driven by passion, burnt out, and everything in-between.

That's why I built Butter Field — because I know what it's like to carry responsibility without authority. And if I've learned anything, it's that influence is the skill that actually moves the work forward.

I'm not teaching theory or idealism. I'm sharing a methodology built from what worked (and what didn't) during 10+ years in your shoes.

  • We work in systems not designed for what we care about.

We carry moral urgency into commercial environments. Long-term thinking into quarterly cycles. Systemic risk into role-based accountability.

We are told to build better business cases. Translate more clearly. Communicate more persuasively.

    And when change stalls,
we are taught to look inward for deficiency.

    Inside-Out Sustainability rejects that narrative.

We are not ineffective because we lack passion. We are not underperforming because we lack intelligence. We are operating inside structurally misaligned systems.

Influence is not about convincing people to care more.

It is about understanding how they are incentivised to act.

Change does not happen when people agree. It happens when they have ownership.

Leadership in impact work is not positional. It is relational.

We regulate ourselves before we regulate the room. We understand paradigms before we argue logic. We design for stake before we seek approval.

We do not collapse our identity into outcomes. We do not confuse resistance with rejection. We do not mistake moral superiority for strategic clarity.

We operate from the inside out.

Because sustainability is not just a technical discipline. It is leadership inside complexity.

    And leadership is a practice.
